I LOVE spring! there are so many fun lessons to learn about nature!
This spring with my son being 2, I though it would be a perfect time to order some caterpillars and watch them transform into butterflies!
I have ordered caterpillars for years in my preschool classroom and was so excited to do the same with my son! I always order from http://www.insectlore.com/ and have always had all my caterpillars successfully turn into healthy butterflies!
I have a large butterfly pavilion for my classroom but for home I got the less expensive, smaller one. Here is the link to it! Mini butterfly pavilion It comes with the mini pavilion and 3 caterpillars!
Our little caterpillars soon grew.... |
and grew... |
and made their cocoons... |
soon we had 3 butterflies!!! |
so pretty!!! |
when we released them my son said "WOW! bye bye butterfly!!!" |
So naturally with having our caterpillars I expanded on the topic and we talked about caterpillars and butterflies and we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar a few dozen times :) and we did a few related projects.
Coffee Filter Butterflies
Materials needs:
-coffee filter
-bingo markers, or any other markers you might have
-clothes pin
decorate the coffee filter... |
Let dry... |
scrunch up the coffee filter and clip with the clothes pin...let your child fly their butterfly around! |
Another activity we did was painting with Q-tips.
I found this activity book at Micheal's craft store for a $1 is has 12 sheets in it!!!
At the bottom of each page is paper watercolor, when you dip a q-tip in water and put it in the color it becomes watercolor....AWESOME!!!! |
My little artist! |
working hard....the paper does rip easily.... |
We did the caterpillar and the butterfly. |
Happy Spring! Enjoy!!!
