homemade puffy paint

Last year I found a recipe for how to make puffy paint, we made it for a project in my preschool class so to involve the kids we put the ingredients into ziplock bags and let the kids squish it and shake it until it was all mixed together and then we cut the tip off of the bag (like how you would make a piping bag for cake decorating)  and let the kids decorate their construction paper.

To do this with my son and our friend Megan we used store bought squeeze bottles (.97 each at walmart) we added the ingredients and shook the bottles.

there are tons of different ways to make this recipe but this is how we made ours

In each bottle:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 4 tsp salt
  • food coloring (we used neon food coloring...it makes pretty colors)
Add small amounts of water to make a smooth paste, to the consistency you want it.
We used the back of cereal boxes to decorate on but any cardboard would work.
After they decorated their pictures we microwaved it for 30 seconds or until the paint puffs and it's dry, or leave out overnight to dry.

This is when it is wet........then you put it in the microwave for 30 seconds and it looks like........

We cut out some cars and and trains and my son and his friend decorated them.

(my picture wont turn lol)
The fun thing is you could use it to decorate any cut out.

look how cute* this crafty lady made cute labels for hers*
She made her puffy paint differently but not sure if you can microwave this kind but wanted to share her cute label idea, she has a printable you can download here.*

enjoy*
